14-month-old boy in eastern China apparently suffers from a rare genetic disorder in which his body is unable to cool itself, according to the Daily Telegraph. The toddler, Song Sheng, reportedly was born without pores in his skin and started to develop scales shortly after birth.
Locals call him fish boy, reports the Telegraph. Physicians explain that since the toddler lacks the ability to sweat or lose heat through his skin, it peels away in scales.
To control his body temperature, his family puts him in ice baths.
"He is in a lot of pain all the time," said his father, Song Dehui, according to the Telegraph. "And if we don't have enough ice he gets a fever."
There's no known cure for the condition, called Lamellar ichthyosis, doctors have reportedly told the child's family.
His father said, "It can be treated but not cured, so we are praying for a miracle or a folk medicine cure."Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/health/2010/03/02/2010-03-02_fish_boy_chinese_child_born_with_rare_disorder_that_causes_him_to_develop_scales.html#ixzz0sgh2SA2n
